How to Update the firmware on an Android TV box

Usually, the firmware update is the same in all Android TV boxes. Below we have listed the stepwise procedure to update the firmware. Also, check your box model and find the update with is for that model series only. Normally, you can easily update your device by connecting it to the Internet and clicking the “Update now” button in the settings menu. However, if for some reason your device isn’t updating, you can also use the recovery mode to update it manually. Here are the steps you need to follow to update firmware on an Android TV box.

Step 1: Find and download the latest firmware update into a USB drive. Make sure to add it to the root folder of the USB drive.

Step 2: Now plug the USB drive in your Andriod TV box.

Step 3: Now open Settings>System>System Upgrade on your TV box. Now select the USB drive as the source.

Wait for a few minutes till the update is complete. Once the process is complete the Android TV box will reboot itself.

Check these things before updating Kodi

Most users don’t face any issues while updating Kodi but in a few boxes the firmware may block the installation. If you are facing this issue check for a few things and perform the update again. If the hardware and software support it, the update should be installed.

Check what operating system is installed on your device. It should be Android 5.0 Lollipop or higher. On any operating system before this, the Kodi update won’t install. Make sure to update your operating system to at least Android 5.0.
You can also try upgrading the Kodi version installed on the box. Kodi’s official website recommends installing updates from 16 Jarvis.
Check if it has a hard/soft reset button. You might need to know the defaults if there is some issue with the installation. If you can’t find the reset button then just look for it inline by entering the model series number.

How to Update Kodi

Kodi sends new updates for the application quite frequently, so regularly updating the app is a must. Using older versions does not mean the device won’t work as we discussed before but it better to perform the updates regularly. Below we have given the stepwise procedure on how to update Kodi on an Android TV box.

Before starting make sure you have an active Google account/Gmail account to proceed further. If you already have one you may start with the update process. If you don’t have one you can make one right here:

Step 1: You need to open the Google Play Store on the Android TV box,

Step 2: Enter the credentials of the google account and click on the login option. If an ID is already logged in you can continue or log out and use your current ID.

Step 3: Once you have logged in, you will see a window that will ask for payment options. There no use in selecting the payment options so you can continue by selecting the “Remind Me Later” button.

Step 4: Next find and open the menu option on the top right corner (three horizontal lines) and click on it.

Step 5: Then you need to click on “My Apps.”

Next, you will see a list of applications that are installed on your device. You will find Kodi in the list if it is not up to date.

Step 6: You can find Kodi and update it separately or click on “Update All” to update all applications altogether.

Once the process is complete make sure to check if the app was updated or not.

A second method to update Kodi

If you are facing issues with updating Kodi in the Google Play Store then there is another method you can try. This is much more complicated than the first method. Make sure you try the first method 2-3 before moving to this one. The steps are given below:

Before starting make a backup of the Kodi add-ons. The addons will need updates before re-installation if they are out of date. Then you need to download it and paste the zip file to the root folder of any USB drive.

Step 1: First open Kodi, and then you need to open programs. And select the “Add-ons” option.

Step 2: You will see a USB-SDCARD Wizard if it is not on the screen then click on get more. Keep trying till the USB-SDCARD Wizard appears.

Step 3: Then you need to enable the USB-SDCARD Wizard. Once enabled you will see a window, find and click on ‘Configure’.

Step 4: Then you need to enter an SD card or a USB and then select “Choose USB/SD Card Destination.”

Step 5: Select the drive you just entered and then click on ‘OK’ twice. Also while selecting the drive make sure you have selected the root directory of the USB and not a folder.

Step 5: Then open the ” Configure” window again and click on open.

Step 6: Click on “Backup just your Add-ons”, in case you want to save your add-on backups.

Once the process is complete launch Kodi and then check if it’s up to date.

Make sure you similarly perform regular software updates on a frequent basis of both firmware and Kodi on your Android TV box. And use your Android TV box without any issue or glitch.

Tip: Android TV Boxes can be used for a lot more than just streaming video from sites like YouTube. You can also use it to play a wide range of Android games, as well as some downloadable titles from the Google Play store. That being the case, you might want to consider a TV Box with extra internal storage space. While the apps you download through Google Play are less than a gigabyte, it’s still nice to have three or four times that much storage capacity for games and videos. Make sure to keep this in mind if you plan to buy a new Android TV. The more internal storage you have the more you can install apps.

Also the same goes for the Internal Memory too. Android TV Boxes with more internal memory cost more, of course, but let’s face it: if you’re looking to improve your TV experience, you’re probably willing to spend more than a few bucks.
